Willy Zabel gained extensive experience in housing construction and worked until 1941 as a building technician in the design department of Magdeburg with Bruno Taut, Johannes Göderitz and Konrad Rühl. His close ties to the Nazi regime are reflected in his subsequent appointment as city architect of České Budějovice, Czechia.
Afterwards, he returned to Magdeburg, where he resumed his previous professional activities and also worked as a lecturer.
