Paul Backes left a lasting architectural legacy in Luckenwalde, where he designed numerous buildings that reflect Expressionist influences as well as decorative elements of the Art Deco style. His work is characterized by striking façades, sculptural details, and carefully crafted ornamentation typical of the architectural trends of the 1920s and early 1930s.
After the Second World War, Backes continued his career in Berlin. From 1950 onward, he worked for the German Sports Committee in Berlin-Pankow, later joined the East Berlin city administration under architect Hermann Henselmann, and from 1954 served as a senior architect at VEB Projektierung Berlin until his death in 1963.
