Following his experience in Braunschweig and Munich, and after specialising in urban planning, Gerhard Gauger took up his post in Magdeburg in July 1924. He cooperated with Konrad Rühl for building the housing estates. When the existing urban expansion programmes were immediately abolished in 1933, Gauger also lost his position. However, by indirect means he was able to resume involvement in housing construction projects.
After the war, he oversaw the reconstruction of the Maxim Gorki Theatre in Magdeburg.
