The consumers's co-operaticve was self-confident...
Description
...in showing big architecture for its own administration and a factory. Today's building at Fabrikstraße 13 is part of a larger planned area by the architect Kurt Bärbig that has never been built. The reinforced concrete building with red clinker takes over the slight curve of the street. The impact of the house along the street is enhanced by the semi-circular stairway that continues the curve in the opposite direction. This part is embellished by the lantern. At the back of the house, an eight-story tower is inserted between the two blocks. The loading ramps were located in the lower area. Also at the buillding's rear are located entrances to the underground car parks. A similar system for loading trucks was established at the consumers's co-operative headquarter in Leipzig. The underground system is connected to the large garage that was built in 1930 at the street Fabrikstraße 46 by Karl Schmidt. It is a pillar-free building, which is spanned by roof trusses.
History
The Konsum co-operatives were awesome active in Germany during the 1920s. In Dresden they planned a huge production complex for meat, a bakery, a distiller and the adminsitration. Plans from 1927 were realised until 1930. It was just finished the part for the meat production and the administration. A closed block was originally the plan, but the worldwide economic crisis stopped all plans. The garage on the other site of the street was added in 1930.
During the bombing of Dresden in February 1945 the building was damaged, but rebuilt. It was in use until 1992. For many years it stayed abandoned in this industrial area of Dresden.
The last big reconstruction of the building was done in the years 2020 until 2022. We visited the place in May 2021, when the reconstruction was happening. Our pictures show that situation so far. If you are currious about the present state, you can find on this website many pictures of the inside after the year 2022. The building was converted into an admintration building.
