Description
The atelier Kind on Dinkelbergstrasse in Riehen is a cubic, functional building. Like its siblings by Artaria and Schmidt, it is one of the flat-roofed houses of the area that caused quite a stir in the late 1920s.
It is situated on a slope, with only the upper part of the house visible from the street, which contains the studio. The first floor apartment is literally subordinated to the atelier to save space and contains a living area, kitchenette, anteroom and bathroom. The studio, on the other hand, is spacious with a skylight and large north-facing window and access to the garden. As in the Meisterhäuser of Dessau, it was clad inside with intense colors.

History
Brunhilde Damira (Smith-Kind) had a preference for modernist architecture and therefore placed the realization of her studio house in the hands of Bräuning and Leu, who were running a hip Basel architectural firm at the time. In the process, she exerted a great deal of influence on the concept and had clear ideas about how the ideas of Neues Bauen were to be implemented.
She used the house for readings, concerts and theater performances with artist friends and acquaintances.
