The department store was commissioned by the family-owned firm Vanderborght Frères, a Brussels-based company specialising in furniture, interior decoration and related household goods. The company had been established in 1920 and commissioned architects Léon Emmanuel Govaerts and Alexis Van Vaerenbergh to design its new premises in central Brussels.
