Ľudovít Winter was a Slovak spa entrepreneur who played a central role in transforming Piešťany into an internationally renowned spa resort. He joined his family’s spa business in Piešťany in 1890. After his father’s death in 1909, he continued expanding and modernising the spa facilities.
Winter supported the development of important buildings, including the Thermia Palace Hotel and the Irma Spa. He also initiated the Colonnade Bridge project, designed by architect Emil Belluš and completed in 1933, to improve the connection between the town and Spa Island.
During the Second World War, Winter was persecuted because of his Jewish origins and imprisoned in concentration camps. Following the nationalisation of the spa business, he lived in difficult circumstances. He died in Piešťany aged 97. Today, he is remembered for his lasting contribution to the development of the town and its spa industry.
