Willi Ludewig began his career with a strong practical foundation, training as a bricklayer before attending a building trade school. At the age of 21, he established his own architectural practice, focusing primarily on cooperative housing and trade union projects.
He later worked together with architect Arthur Nowottnik on projects for the housing associations GEHAG and GEWOBA.
Ludewig was married to a Jewish woman. As a result of persecution and the racial laws introduced in Germany under the Nazi regime, the couple fled to Buenos Aires, Argentina, after 1935. There, Willi Ludewig was able to resume his professional career and continue working as an architect.
