The Villa Winternitz is the last building to be completed within Loos's lifetime.

Description

A typical villa with Loos's concept "raumplan" and typical details for Loos's work, like terraces and pergolas.

On this website is a good summary of the villa. On the ground floor is located the entrance, nowadays used as the cashier. Behind it most of the space is used for the living room. On the first floor are placed the sleeping room, further living rooms, a bathroom and a toilet. A big terrace is accessible from here. On the second floor are further romms and the access to the terrace too.

The caretaker’s flat is located in the basement level. Today, the entire house has been furnished and presented to reflect the period in which the villa was originally built.

On the website are beautiful pictures of the interior.

History

This villa is Adolf Loos's last work. He became ill, that's why Karel Lhota finished the construction. He also designed the building's interiors. The family Winternitz lived in this villa until 1943. They were Jews, so the German Nazis took over the house and sold it to the City of Prague. A kindergarten was in use up to the year 1997. In 1991, David Cysař, a great-grandchild of Winternitz, demanded the restitution of the family's building. In 1999 started the renovation of the villa, that lasted for three years.

The house is a member of the Iconic Houses network and is oped to public.
