A multifunctional building for art and life style, partly designed as a bridge.

Description

The building stands on concrete pillars above a branch of the Vltava river and extends to the island of Slovanský ostrov, characterising the building also as a bridge. The entrance to the exhibition rooms is on the Vltava embankment Masaryko nábřeží. To ensure that the rooms are bright, a gabled skylight is inserted in the roof. Next to the exhibition rooms, a kind of single-loaded corridor on the southern side leads to the building sections located on the island, which house the gastronomy of the building. Large window panes provide a connection to the river. In the interwar period, these rooms were rented out that the association could earn money. The restaurant's interiors were decorated by the Slovak painter Emil Filla, and some of the cubist paintings are still preserved. Offices of the association were inaccessible to the public.

History

The association had the mills Šítkovské mlýny at Vltava river demolished in 1927, only the water tower called Šítkovská věž from the 16th century remained. The new building of the Mánes Association was designed as an exhibition and social house and built between 1928 and 1930. The opening of the building took place in on 29 July 1929. The chairman of the building committee was Josef Gočár, himself a member of Mánes, who ceremoniously handed over the building to the Mánes Association on 30 September 1930. Among the patrons of the association was Czechoslovak President Tomáš G. Masaryk. With the restaurant and bar, the building became a popular destination directly at the Vltava river.

Since the association was banned in 1956, it also lost this building. Even after the political change, when the Mánes Association was re-established, the building was not returned to the association. At present, the building is used by the city of Prague for various exhibitions. The restaurant and bar area is located in the area on the island Slovanský ostrov.

The Mánes building, together with the water tower, was declared a cultural monument in 1958.
