The Schocken Group built a department store on this site already around 1907. They succeeded in extending the first property at Hauptstraße 7 and 9 to Marienplatz. Subsequently, the facades were adapted to the taste of the time. First, the part along the street Hauptstraße received a new, uniform sandstone facade after 1924. Some years later Schocken decided to reconstruct the interiors, culminating in the redesign of the facade on Marienplatz. Initially, it was the building at Marienplatz 8 with four axes (the left side), the building at Marienplatz 6 with two axes was included in the project after demolishing a small house (the right side).Like all department stores of the Schocken chain, this building was also Aryanised and renamed Merkur AG. In the GDR, the building became part of the Konsumgenossenschaft with the name "Konsument". After 1990, Horten moved in, but moved out already in 1999. Since then, the building has been empty. In order to make a building with such a history and central location attractive again, new utilisation concepts are being planned to create space for offices, gastronomy and flats.
