Light, interwar architecture in historic surroundings.

Description

A great, purist building to see the principle of transparent architecture. The lower floor has large shop windows. The first and second floor are designed with ribbon windows to let in as much light as possible. Columns behind the windows making clear that the load of the building is supported by them to allow the construction of the large window areas. The top floor is set back and equipped with a terrace, used as a restaurant. The staircase is highlighted as a horizontal glass tower, pleasantly contrasting with the vertical ribbon windows.

History

The house was built in 1938/39 for the piano company Schlögl, that sold pianos and offered music supplies. In the basement, a restaurant was operated that belonged to Mr. Tůma. The Schlögl company existed until 1950, when it was nationalised. The shop was converted to sell cheap furniture, but pianos were still rented out.A gay club called T-club, named after Tůma, used the basement from 1983 to 1985. Even if you don't understand Czech, in the report Život s cejchem by Czech Television you can see pictures of the T-club by photographer Libuše Jarcovjáková at 20:00 (and see her), to get a feeling of that time.

The former owners got the house back in 1991 and reintroduced the shop for instruments and music. The current owner is the granddaughter Jana Švehlová.
