One of Berlin's first modern housing projects of the 1920s.

Description

The houses along Afrikanische Straße have three floors and a very high attic. In the three side streets, lower buildings lead in a zigzag pattern westwards into the slightly older, neighboring settlement called Jungfernheide. All in all 88 apartments with sizes from one to three bed apartments are part of the housing estate. As a project for the growing city those houses were planned much lower than older Berlin tenant houses. The courtyards are no stone landscapes anymore, but a green garden for the house's tenants.

History

The plans for those houses date back to 1925. It is one of Berlin's first modern housing estates, built between 1926 and 1927. The project Mies van der Rohe Siedlung suggests that the sources for the housing estate are very weak, so that it is hard to tell something about the past.
