The building consists of two functionally different parts. To the north is the heating plant, which houses all the technical equipment needed to heat the main station building and some offices. To the south is the tower with the signal box. It has porthole windows in the lower section. The area of the control facilities is equipped with a long line of windows providing a good view over the tracks.
The building is made of reinforced concrete and clad with clinker bricks.
The building is considered by some critics to be one of the major works of the so-called Futurism. The construction project began in 1929. At first, only the heating house was planned, in which the boilers stood as the heating system for the new main station. The project also included the signal box in the south with a tower for monitoring the track and switch systems of the main station.
