A Modernist Boathouse for University Water Sports

Description

The rectangular boathouse is organised over two levels. The ground floor serves as storage space for water sports equipment. The reinforced concrete construction eliminates the need for internal supporting pillars. This creates an open and unobstructed space, allowing water sports equipment to be stored efficiently and conveniently. Double doors are incorporated on both long sides and the water front of the building, allowing equipment to be brought into and removed from the boathouse from all those sides. The upper floor accommodates changing rooms and serves as the club’s communal space and meeting area. An external circulation route along the upper floor allows the functional rooms to be bypassed, providing direct access to the club rooms in the north-eastern part of the building.

A terrace projects from the north-eastern side of the building. Screened from the nearby pathway, it offers privacy for users while preserving unobstructed views across the River Main.

History

In 1930, the University of Frankfurt commissioned this boathouse for water sports activities on the River Main. Architect Wilhelm Schütte was primarily entrusted with the project, as his work focused largely on educational buildings and facilities.

To this day, the boathouse continues to be used for rowing and stand-up paddleboarding courses.
