He was a well-known composer and lyricist of his time. He studied chemistry, music only privately. In 1911 he was a co-founder of the cabaret association Červená sedma, for which he also sang and played the piano. After 1920 he wrote songs for many Prague cabarets, operetta and revue theatres. He also advocated the use of previously unknown instruments in Czech schools, such as the ukelele.
In addition, he dealt with topics such as authors' rights.
