As a gynaecologist, Schaefer was one of the first specialists in Gera from 1914. He helped politically persecuted people during the Nazi regime, which is why his clinic was not expropriated after 1945. In 1961 he moved to his native town of Marburg, in the western occupation zone. In 1961, the Berlin Wall was built and Germany was divided until 1989.
