Since the 19th century the clothing industry became the most important economic sector of Prostějov. Mechanical engineering and the metalworking industry became significant in the interwar period. In 1939, the architect Bohuslav Fuchs commented on modern architecture in Prostějov:
"The development of modern Czech architecture can be followed in Prostějov as in almost no other Moravian town...[...] The entire Czech modern architecture parades infront of us."
