Description

Karel Chochola's stadium stand in the stadium's west has two small buildings on the edges. Between them are set the spectator stands with a roof supported by pillars. The Sokolovna gym is the work of two architects, Jaroslav Stránský and Josef Šlégl, and appears to be a constructivist building. The different zones of the exterior structure, set into each other like cubes, refer to the different functions of the rooms inside.

History

The Sokol gymnastics association began planning a new stadium in 1923. The grandstand still remains from the original stadium. It was built in 1924 and is one of the oldest purist buildings in Czechia. This work by Karel Chochola was restored in 2019. Adjacent to the stadium is located the Sokolovna gym, whose construction time was protracted. The foundation stone was laid at least in 1928, but only the shell was completed in 1939. Due to World War II, no further construction could take place, which is why the building could only be completed after the war until 1947.

In 2004, the stadium was declared a national monument.
