Description

A very inviting reception building awaits passengers at this station. It is clearly visible from several sides at the junction. The small, flat round building made of clinker bricks has two entrances and exits above which the name of the station is displayed. A glass construction bears the symbol "S", standing for S-Bahn. Next to the entrances the buiulding housed little shops.

Inside used to be the ticket counters. Today, the rooms are used for various shops and restaurants. The windows in the domed building illuminate the interior of the station during the day.

Passengers reach the lower-level tracks with a covered platform and two tracks via a bridge and a staircase.

At the same time was built the similar London Underground station Arnos Grove.

History

This station was built between 1932 and 1933 as part of the electrification of this line. It is one of several Berlin S-Bahn stations that were built in a similar way during this period.

The Berlin S-Bahn is part of the German railways Reichsbahn (now Deutsche Bahn) and the buildings were commissioned by the railways.

The building was badly damaged during World War II. It was provisionally rebuilt in 1951 and 1952. The original appearance was only reconstructed in 1984/85. The concrete skeleton was retained and the spaces in between were rebuilt with clinker bricks.
