The reason for building many residential buildings in Wismar in the second half of the 1930s was the establishment of the aircraft manufacturer Dornier. The location on the Baltic Sea and the knowledge of the locals in metal construction were reasons for the branch to support Germany preparing World War II. The project of building factories and housing was sponsored by the mayor Alfred Pleuger, who wanted to make his city a big city. He was a member of the party NSDAP and was in function from 1933-1945. Based on the size of the city, many large apartment houses were built in Wismar compared with other German cities. This was not common during the Nazi era, as the ideology called for the construction of smaller houses and single-family homes (Haus und Scholle).
In the documents of listed buildings in Wismar is never dated out, in which year exactly these houses were built. It is always mentioned, that all houses of the Wismar plan were built between 1935/36 and 1940. Some say even 1933, but Dornier closed the contract for its new factories in Wismar in December 1933. So most probably all construction works started later than 1933.
