A tiny, like gem.

Description

The construction is quite simple and just therefore stunning. The tank keeper's house is very small and contrasts with the elongated roof ending with a curve. The roof rests on a column. The facility is slightly slanted towards the two adjacent roads in order to favour the entrance for vehicles. Some authors mention, that this type of petrol station could have been a type construction of the company. This shows that there are only a few examples left and very little information about them. The architect is also unknown.

History

The Heritage Institute mentions that the petrol station was built around 1930. The exact year is therefore not known. It was part of the Rhenania-Ossag Mineralölwerke AG in Chemnitz and is one of the few remaining buildings in this part of the city due to the heavy destruction during World War II. In 1950s the petrol station became part of the Minol chain, operating in the GDR. On this website you can see how the petrol station looked in the times of GDR.

After 1990 the little place was abandonded. The building was severely damaged by a flood in 2013. Luckily it was renovated and the small space was used as a hotel. The advertising read: The smallest hotel in Chemnitz. At present, the little gem is not in use and may get a new chance, because Chemnitz will become the European Capital of Culture in 2025.
