A Petrol Station Still Serving Drivers Today

Description

This building lies somewhere between beautiful and functional in its design. Its ground plan is hexagonal, while the widely projecting circular canopy is made of reinforced concrete. The roof is supported by slender pillars, between which the petrol pumps are positioned, a rather unusual sight today, especially as the pillars themselves are barely protected against vehicle collisions.

At the centre stands the hexagonal brick kiosk building, fitted with windows.

History

To accommodate the growing volume of private motor traffic, petrol stations with distinctive architectural designs were built at selected locations throughout the city. In Dresden, this filling station building from 1927 is still in operation today. So far, the heritage authorities have not been able to determine who designed it.
