Modernist "Sun, Air, Lake and River Bath" at the lake Biel/Bienne

Description

Ernst Berger's lido design was one of a typical public bath of the time with an elegant and distinctive diving tower (unfortunately we do not have a detailed picture yet), an extensive sandy beach in the shape of a crescent and a sunbathing lawn. In addition, there is a flat building with a restaurant including a terrace and an annex for the dressing rooms, which imitated the bend of the shore. The official name at that time was "Sun, Air, Lake and River Bath".

History

The lido was built from 1929 - 1932 after plans of Ernst Berger and the project management of Otto Schaub, who was the leading city architect of Biel/Bienne at that time.

The construction was carried out as part of the redevelopment of the waterfront in the late 20's and was realized by unemployed people who belonged to a job creation scheme that was quite common at the time.

After the war, there were various structural interventions that changed the original architecture of the bath for the worse. It was only much later, during the preparations for Expo.02, the 6th Swiss National Exhibition, in 2002, that the original design was recalled and the bath was returned to its original form.
