Workers housing in an area with more private properties

Description

The semi-circular building has two floors at both ends. In the middle dominates a three-storey entrance area. On the courtyard side, this area is provided with loggias. This part of the building takes up the stairway inside, leading to central corridors. Along the road runs a small wall with a metal fence that is no longer complete.

For a place as small as Möhlau, this architecture is extraordinary.

History

Industry, especially opencast lignite mining, played a major role in this region. Next to Möhlau is Zschornewitz. At the beginning of the 20th century there was built a huge lignite power plant for electricity generation. A workers' settlement for this works was built in Zschornewitz in 1915, which is now a listed building. The construction office of this settlement (Bauabteilung der Kolonie Zschornewitz) took over the planning of the single persons home in Möhlau.

This building was built for single workers. Its semi-circular shape was supposed to be expanded into a ring, but this never happened. With the beginning of the National Socialist rule in Germany, the building was converted into a sports school of the NSDAP party. Shortly afterwards, in 1935, it was converted into an apartment house for families.

The house was reconstructed in 2018.
