A house in Cologne that became reconstructed after World War II.

Description

Round shapes are often connected with positive effects. The curve takes away the austerity of houses and with this house in Cologne is created even a small square in front of the building. The reinforced concrete structure was clad with thin slabs of travertine and the closely spaced windows create the impression of ribbon windows. To break the lines of the house, a small avant-corps on the first floor on the left was added and the vertical staircase on the right in addition with the stepped back floors. In contrast to its original condition, the house consists of six floors today instead of sever floors.

History

The Hotel Disch used to be at this place until 1928. Its name was adopted. Since the owners considered the location unfavorable for running a hotel, they decided to have an administration building built. It was opened on February 1st in 1930. Some years later the house was damaged by the bombing and the upper floor was destroyed. However, the basic structure remained intact and the house was rebuilt after the war without the top floor. The value of the house was recognized. Therefore it was placed under monument protection in 1981. After many authorities and offices used the house, it has been an office building since its last comprehensive renovation.
