A house with many secrets.

Description

The location of the Baťa department store is atypical. In all other cities in Czechoslovakia, Baťa is located right in the centre. In Ústí nad Labem, however, it is located on the other side of the river Elbe and far from the large pedestrian flows. The house is designed with a round corner and a square entrance leading into the building on the ground floor. The large shop windows on the ground floor differ from the smaller windows on the upper floors. The roundness above the entrance has also been emphasised on the upper floors, as the windows have been joined together to form a short version of ribbon windows. On the far left is the staircase, marked on the outside by the vertical band of windows.

A drawing on this website suggests that the department store was planned to be larger on the right side. This leads us to assume that the low extension to the right in Kozina Street may have been added later.

The house's design is similar to the former Baťa department store in Turnov.

History

According the information we found, this building might have been built between 1931 and 1936.

Although the building documents do not explicitly mention the name of the architect, the building bears the signature of Vladimír Karfík, especially when comparing this department store with the one in Kroměříž. The missing signature is one of the secrets of the house. It is also unusual that we could't find any pictures on the internet when the departemnt store was still used.
