One of Madrid's most impressive houses.

Description

The house has been built very effectively on the triangular point of the square. With its orientation towards the square and the show corner, it rises with more floors than on either side. This further enhances the dramatic effect. This impression is reinforced even more by the pointed curve and the fact that the windows in the round area are grouped to form ribbon windows.

Many sources cite Erich Mendelsohn as a role model. But the so-called Flatiron buildings, like the one in New York City, can also be viewed as templates.

The multifunctional building is used for cafés, shops, a cinema, offices and a hotel. The construction made of reinforced concret is cladded with granit and marble. It is also particularly highlighted that attention has been paid to the use of fireproof materials inside. Very important for a high-rise building, as it accommodates a lot of people and the escape routes can be very long.

History

Construction work on the Carrión building started on 11th April 1931. The inauguration took place on 15th October 1933. It is pointed out, that the architecture is influenced by Erich Mendelsohn. In Spanish is even used a term for this "mendelsohnianas". It might be compared with the department in Wrocław or with the House of the German Metalworkers in Berlin.

The building was designed for offices and a hotel, as well for shops, a café and a cinema.

In 2018 it was declared a historical monument.
