With this building, Brno was supposed to get its first high-rise, but...

Description

The ground floor zone is partially set back, making more visible the construction's pillar as part of the footpath area. The five storeys above form the trapezoidal basic shape of the department store. It stands without a connection to other buildings on this site, so that it can be viewed from all sides. The two upper floors are set back. The original drawings by Karfík show a different proportioning. It can be assumed that changes to the plans during construction resulted in the redesign of the two upper floors.

The major changes to the facade had an impact on the visual effect of the curtain wall, which is intended to evoke lightness as the building is supported by the internal load-bearing structure.

History

...in the end, the subsoil was too unsuitable to safely built a building with 23 storeys. Everything was prepared for this by Vladimír Karfík, because 245 pilons, each 10 metres long, support the foundation. But only eight storeys were built. But even so, the Baťa shoe company was able to build an impressive department store in the centre of Brno. The facade has changed a lot in the meantime. Due to destruction during World War II and the new glass cladding installed in 1966, today's appearance differs greatly from the once rather transparent style. The idea to build the high-rise in the heart of Brno was designed by the well-known Czech architect Eva Jiřičná in 2008. In an adaptation of the old ideas, she planned to integrate flats on the upper floors. The project failed due to the resistance of the National Heritage Institute.
