Description

Originally, slightly lower, separate buildings were planned. The central building with cinema and the greater height were planned and implemented in a second stage. The two perimeter blocks along Milady Horákové and Heřmanova streets are similar, but not identical. The uniformity is broken up by the fact that the block on Milady Horákové Street was given a round corner with balconies. There are also shops (once used by the Baťa shoe company) on the ground floor and mezzanine on this main street. The ground floor of the central building is still used by the Oko cinema. The floors contain flats of different sizes. The sizes range from small one-room flats to spacious five-room flats. The fact that there was originally a telephone on the ground floor from which everyone in the building could be called is a bit of an oddity. But it represented for sure a kind of comfort and luxery, as well as garbage chutes on the floors so that not each garbage had to be carried downstairs.

History

We did not have any information, yet, what originally stood on this property. In the Holešovice district, industrial buildings were demolished at in the 1930s. On this site existed a textile factory.

Construction works of this large complex began in 1937 and the first phase at the junction of Milady Horákové and Františka Křížka was completed in 1938. The section along Heřmanova Street followed by 1939 and the central building with the cinema Oko in 1940.

The house was built for civil servants, ensuring a regular income.

The cinema still exists today and is one of the attractions in this part of the city. It will be due to renovation works for six months in 2025.
