Some details, such as a round oriel or the zigzag arrangement of the individual houses, make this block more interesting.

Description

The block Gerhard-Ellrodt-Str. 14/16 has a total of five storeys, the other blocks four storeys, resulting in different building heights. The entrances are below street level, two shops can also be found somewhat hidden at this location.

The most exciting elements are the staggering of the blocks and the rounded corners on blocks Gerhard-Ellrodt-Str. 14 and 16 on the first floor as well as the rounded bay windows on block Ponickaustr. 26. All those elements add up to a messy impression of the whole block.

History

The idea of small apartments was realised with this block. At the beginning of the 1920s was planned a more traditional exterior. It got modified by the architect Rothmann, shortly before the construction work started in 1931. At the beginning, it might take some time to realise that the ensemble is made up of four blocks that are arranged in steps towards the street.

As often observed in Leipzig, the block's appearance has worsened as a result of the latest modernisation. The house received insulation and plastic framed windows. Thus, the once modern complex, standing out strongly from its surroundings, is not very attractive today.
