A company of success built a new headquarter.

Description

The building consists roughly of two parts. The left side is dominated by the glazed stairways. It is constructed of reinforced concrete. This facade was once intended to advertise the company's products. The left part of the glass facade was always designed differently than the middle and right parts, because the toilets are "hidden" behind it. Nowadays, the building's new name is written on opaque glass. The staircase itself is clearly highlighted behind the transparent glass panes. The company's lettering and the logo was originally placed above the glass wall.

The right part of the building is masoned and is decorated with equal windows and ceramic tiles. This area originally housed the offices on the ground floor and first floor. The director Josef Veselý had his office and apartment on the second floor.

We do not know, who was able to access the roof terrace, if only the director or the whole factory's staff?

History

The success of the cosmetics company Alpa, the largest manufacturer of rubbing alcohol products in the world during the 1920s and 1930s, inspired the company's boss Josef Veselý, maybe also some of his partners, to built a new headquarter next to the factory. Next to other architects, Bohuslav Fuchs won the compitition. The plans show that the current building is the right part of a larger planned site. We cannot find anywhere why it was not carried out.

In 1948 the company was nationalized at moved to Velké Meziříčí and never returned to Brno.

The building is today used for offices and is called Fuchsia to commemorate the architect Bohuslav Fuchs. An application sended to the Czech Ministry of Culture is intended to declare the building a national cultural monument in order to ensure its historical protection.
