Henry B. Sloman emigrated to Chile before the First World War. From there he exported Chilean saltpeter to Europe from his own mines. This is used as nitrogen fertilizer and in food preservation and, to a lesser extent, in the production of glass or enamel. He settled in Hamburg in 1898 and became the richest man in the city. His company's office building has a reference to Chile in its name. In 1924 he founded Finanzbank AG.
