Fritz Tugendhat was born into a family of textile manufactures in Brno. Although he wanted to stdy medicine, he went on in the family's tradition. With the rising power of the Nazis in Germany, first his wife Grete Tugendhat went with the children to St. Gallen in Switzerlandin May 1938. He went there a bit later to safe his life. Some years later the family went to Venezuela. They hoped to return to Brno, but they decided to go again to Switzerland.
