After an apprenticeship as a bricklayer and military service from 1916-1920, he studied geodesy and cartography at the Prague Charles University and master bricklayer at the Prague Industrial School. In 1927 he founded his own architectural office in Turnov. In addition to building forms, which were influenced by Kubism and Expressionism, he gradually moved more towards functionalist tendencies in the 1930s.
