Pavao Deutsch

June 23, 1897 in Zagreb, Croatia
April 24, 1948 in Zagreb, Croatia

Pavao Deutsch was born to Jewish parents. He studied in Vienna until 1921, after which he transferred to the newly established Technical College in Zagreb, where he earned his doctorate in 1926. From as early as 1923, he worked in partnership with Aleksandar Freudenreich in a shared architectural office.

Deutsch consistently followed contemporary architectural trends, yet his work remained characterized by a distinctly restrained and sober style. One of the highlights of his career is the building at Pod zidom 10, designed in 1930, which was the first to display clear modernist features. Shortly thereafter, he created the building at Gajeva 2B, where his mature modernist expression reached its fullest development.

The buildings he designed later in the 1930s are significantly more austere. With their small windows and simplified forms, they resemble the rapidly constructed architecture that would become common in the 1950s.
