Putna studied architecture at the Brno University of Technology (VUT) with Jiřím Kroha between 1924 and 1930. Until 1935 he worked in the offices of Vladimír Fischer and Jindřich Kumpošt. In 1936 he was appointed Municipal Building Supervisor and Building Commissioner in Prostějov. He remained in this job until 1950, after which he taught architecture at the Brno VUT.
