Until the 1920s, Jan Wils was among the important representatives of the Amsterdam School and the best-known architects in the Netherlands. For decades he was predominantly perceived as a founding member of the avant-garde artists' association De Stijl. However, his work later remained unappreciated. His overall oeuvre comprises considerably more than 200 architectural works.
