Hugo Ehrlich was born to Jewish parents. After completing his studies in Vienna, he played a significant role in shaping Zagreb’s architectural landscape in the 1920s. Together with his colleague Viktor Kovačić, with whom he ran a joint studio, he developed a subtly modern style that often incorporated references to historical architectural forms.
Through his collaboration with younger architects in his office, Ehrlich came into closer contact with international modernism. Influenced by these new ideas, he designed one of his most notable works shortly before his death: the Zgrada Mirovinske zaklade gradske štedionice, located at the corner of Gajeva 2 on Zagreb’s central square, Trg bana Jelačića.
