After studying in various places and serving in the First World War, Herbert Boehm moved to Wrocław, where he became acquainted with Ernst May. In 1925, he followed May to Frankfurt am Main, where, as a senior official, he worked with him on the general development plan and on numerous housing estates. He remained in the city even after May’s departure.
In 1936, however, he returned to Wrocław. During the Second World War, the Polish city of Gdynia was occupied by Germany. Working closely with the Nazi authorities, he advanced plans for the city’s redevelopment, and was therefore not without political convictions of his own.
After 1945, he returned to Frankfurt am Main, where he worked until his death as Director of Building and head of the city’s planning department.
