Until 1894 Hans Poelzig studied architecture in Berlin and became a Prussian civil servant. But in 1903 he had the chance to change to Breslau, today Wrocław. At the State Academy of Arts and Crafts (Staatliche Akademie für Kunst und Kunstgewerbe) he led this school as its director, making this school a flagship for modern architecture and design.
In 1920 he went back to Berlin to work as a professor at the Academy and the Berlin Technical University.
He designed buildings mostly in Berlin, but also in other cities and towns.
The Nazis banned him from his work and in 1936 he died, because of a third stroke.
