Hans Petersen studied in Lübeck and opened his office in 1931. His work is mostly connected with North Germany and is orientated on traditional styles. His one and only modernist building in a narrower sense is the Pedagogical Academy in Frankfurt (Oder).
During World War II he coordinated the construction of high-rise bunkers in Kiel. After the war, he worked on various types of buildings, primarily building old people's homes.
