Description

Hermann Herter created with this stop shelter the prototype of Basel's characteristic tramway stop shlters. It consists of an oval-shaped roof. The roof overhangs widely and serves as a shelter for waiting passengers. In a small oval shape, the construction is supported by a centre section. This contains a kiosk in the middle, a ticket desk and a public toilet. Benches are arranged around this central structure.

Even that we do not have any information about the construction, it just can be a concrete core that is able to hold the long roof without supports.

History

It is surprising that so little information can be found about this fascinating building. It is reported very brittlely that it was built in 1928. Looking at older photos of the square, it is noticeable that a tram shelter already stood on this site in the second half of the 19th century in the days of the horse-drawn railway. The current shelter was built larger by the town planning councillor Herter and represented an improvement to the public space. Based on this building, the round shape of the tram stop shelters was used again and again in Zurich, including in the new construction of the Limmatplatz stop. The design of the square is strongly characterises by the stop shelter.
