An opulent tram stop

Description

Such a large roof for a tram shelter is certainly unusual. The round shapes fit both the space and the idea of mobility. Some of the trams approach the square Bellevue in curves. Together with the movement of people, the square is a kind of organic city architecture. The historic buildings consist of a steel skeleton construction covered with concrete. The roof was constructed from wood. The lights at the top of the pillars illuminate the ceiling. This indirect light has a warm and calming effect.

History

The construction for the tram stops are also referred to as pavilions. The Swiss National Exhibition was held in Zurich in 1939. A new design was commissioned for the tram stop, which is located directly at the lake and close to the opera house. Construction began in 1938, and the design is similar to the tram shelter on Paradeplatz. The café in the centre was added in 1980 into the former waiting room. To the south of the central building is the so-called service building, which was built in 1939. It also houses a public toilet.

At the west and northern parts of the tram stop two more tram shelters were added in 2015. They follow the design of the two tram shelters from 1939.
