The tower block as an expression of Freiberg's affiliation to the 20th century.

Description

The permitted height of 22 metres was fully utilised for the house. This includes a ground floor with shops and 6 further storeys.

The centre of the three buildings attracts the most attention, and not just because it is the tallest. It contains most of the elements that make the house appear to be part of the modern family, including the balconies and the roof terrace, each with metal railings. The ground floor impresses with its recessed corner and the short arcaded sidewalk.

The two flatter side buildings in both streets lead over to the neighbouring buildings.

History

We were unable to determine an actual start of construction for the building. But 1929 is mentioned several times and the first tenants moved in in November 1929.

Smaller buildings stood on this site, that had to be demolished. The corner house on the opposite side of the street to the south-east was also demolished as it protruded too much into the street and threatened to obstruct the traffic. The schoolyard is still located on this site today. The traffic on the street in between was even supposed to be changed once with the construction of the tower block. The construction of the tower block therefore influenced its immediate surroundings. As the neighbouring tenants tried to stop the construction or to demand a lower height and this was always rejected by the city council, we can assume that this building was a municipal task, especially as the architect Salzmann was active as city planning officer.Within the city of Freiberg, the construction of this 22 metre high building was a first in the city's history. Never before had such a tall secular building been built. The location was strategically chosen as it was situated in a dip in the road and therefore had little impact on the city skyline.
