Corner Building: Massing and Urban Presence

Description

Branko Petrović constructed a corner building whose impact is enhanced by its prominent location. It comprises not only two visible façades, but also occupies a position on a broad street, which makes the building clearly visible even from a distance.

To emphasise the massing, he used balconies from the first to the fourth floor, a pergola structure for the rooftop, and three distinct building volumes. The central volume is set slightly back, yet rises higher than the others. Petrović employed similar constructions at the nearby property at Kralja Zvonimira 26 and at Kvatertinkov trg.

History

Very little information can be found about the residential and commercial building. It was constructed in 1935 and belonged to Berta Pick. She was most probably Berta Heinzel (née Pick), the wife of a former mayor of Zagreb. It is probable that she wished to continue his legacy of urban expansion while at the same time generating an income from the project.
