A Developed Corner-Building Scheme in Zagreb

Description

Tomislav Premerl wrote in the book Hrvatska moderna arhitektura između dva rata (Croatian Modern Architecture Between the Two World Wars) that the building already represents a fully developed scheme for houses at street intersections.

This may refer to the fact that, alongside the horizontally oriented section, there stands a striking cubic volume containing only windows and rising one full storey higher than the rest of the building. In addition, the corner section is designed as a rounded form with balconies. The top floor of this rounded section is conceived as a narrow balcony.

History

In 1936, Bogdan Petrović designed this residential building with shops on the ground floor for the clients Hoffmann and Singer. Unfortunately, it has not been possible to establish who these individuals were. The building was completed and ready for occupation in 1937.
