A Prominent Corner Building of Zagreb’s Interwar Residential Architecture

Description

The corner location is particularly well suited to highlighting the residential building with its ground-floor retail units. Rather than forming a sharp corner, the building features an extended curve made possible by the generous space available, making it recognisable even from a distance.

Owing to the relatively high ground floor, the first floor begins noticeably above street level. Up to the fifth floor, the building follows the established building line. On the sixth floor, the façade line is continued by a concrete pergola, while the external wall is set back, creating a roof terrace.

History

The cited source names the entrepreneur Branko Bitterman as both the client and the person after whom the building was named. However, it has not been possible to identify this individual through online research. The architect Bogdan Petrović appears to have designed the building as early as 1939; it was subsequently constructed in 1940 and 1941. The ground floor has always accommodated catering establishments and continues to serve this purpose today.
