A hotel that did not meet the demands of the 1960s.

Description

The reinforced concrete construction in the house gave the architect the opportunity to design the elongated balconies, not requiring any further supports. The marble-clad building is made up of two structures. Both have different decorations: whether the round ends of the balconies, ending with a canopy on the top floor, or the vertical construction on the upper floor of the left half of the house.

All in all the house has many constructivist details, the contrasts of which create the dynamics of the building mass. The round balconies, in contrast to the left, angular part of the building with the avant-corps in the upper area with the concrete partition wall in the middle.

History

The hotel was built according to the architect's plans from 1934. It is not stated anywhere when construction work began. The client is also not known. The hotel opened in 1936. During World War II, Portugal was a more or less neutral state and was a meeting point for many foreign spies. The Hotel Vitória was primarily home to German spies who belonged to the German Gestapo. After the war, the building was used as a hotel until 1965. At that time it was probably no longer considered acceptable. Unfortunately, what that means cannot be found. Were the rooms too small or uncomfortable, were the bathrooms and toilets outside the rooms? Was the location inconvenient? It is unfortunately not known yet. After the political upheavals in Portugal, the Portuguese Communist Party has been using the building since 1976.
