A representative house from the Ottoman period called Konak, once stood on this site. It was typical for Serbian cities that most of these buildings were demolished. This hotel was built on the property from June 1936 to October 1937. It must have been greatly admired at the time with its style, size, with 100 rooms and amenities such as running water.
The good level of equipment was certainly the reason why German officers used it during the occupation of Serbia in World War II. A bomb attack by a Serb who killed several German officers in the dining room in 1941 went down in Serbian history. A monument in front of the hotel has commemorated this event since 1986.
After World War II, the hotel became the Army House. It achieved its greatest historical fame when President Tito stayed with Algerian President Ahmed Ben Bella in 1964 here.
Between 1994 and 2011, the hotel was used for refugees who needed accommodation due to the wars in the former Yugoslavia.
Since 2015 the building was modernized until 2024 and has been used as a hotel again since then.
