Niš's elegant hotel

Description

The house can present its entrance side to the riverside park. The lower two floors are primarily made of glass. The upper three floors have smaller windows set in a façade clad in stone. The once upper floor with the small round windows was certainly not an area for guests. Once the hotel housed also a cinema and was equipped with garages.

We do not have written sources about the construction methods used for the hotel. But in one article of the newspapers Niške vesti is shown a picture taken during the reconstruction. At this moment, the rear area of the hotel has no cladding and a concrete skeleton construction appears. If the rear building was not demolished and rebuilt, this would be evidence of the construction method. A lot of changes were made to the house during the reconstruction. Two floors were added and an elevator shaft was added next to the entrance area. This also covers the crossbar on the top of the building, that visually encloses the house and on which the illuminated advertising with the name of the hotel was once placed.

History

A representative house from the Ottoman period called Konak, once stood on this site. It was typical for Serbian cities that most of these buildings were demolished. This hotel was built on the property from June 1936 to October 1937. It must have been greatly admired at the time with its style, size, with 100 rooms and amenities such as running water.

The good level of equipment was certainly the reason why German officers used it during the occupation of Serbia in World War II. A bomb attack by a Serb who killed several German officers in the dining room in 1941 went down in Serbian history. A monument in front of the hotel has commemorated this event since 1986.

After World War II, the hotel became the Army House. It achieved its greatest historical fame when President Tito stayed with Algerian President Ahmed Ben Bella in 1964 here.

Between 1994 and 2011, the hotel was used for refugees who needed accommodation due to the wars in the former Yugoslavia.

Since 2015 the building was modernized until 2024 and has been used as a hotel again since then.
